Broadcast Audience

Every broadcast goes to one audience you pick in the composer. Flo does not offer per-tag or custom segment pickers in the dashboard today — you choose either your full marketing list or one membership at a time.

Creator plan required

This guide explains who is included, who is left out, how counts work, and how member sends differ from list-wide newsletters. For plans and the broadcasts list, see Broadcasts overview.

Where you choose the audience

When you compose a broadcast (Dashboard → Broadcasts → New broadcast, or Edit on a draft), look for the Audience row near the top of the editor.

You will see:

ControlWhat it does
All subscribersSends to your confirmed marketing list
Members onlySends to active fans of one membership
Membership dropdownAppears when Members only is selected — pick which membership
Count pillLive number, for example 1,240 subscribers or 86 members

The same audience is saved with the draft. Send, Schedule, and the confirmation popup all use this choice.

All subscribers

This is the default for most newsletters, launches, and list-wide updates.

Who receives the email

IncludedExcluded
Contacts with status subscribed on Dashboard → SubscribersPending — signed up but have not clicked the confirmation link
Fans who completed double opt-in via your Newsletter blockUnsubscribed — opted out of your marketing list
Valid email addresses Flo can deliver toAddresses Flo has suppressed after hard bounces or deliverability issues (see Manage your list)

The count pill and send confirmation say confirmed subscribers — that means subscribed, not pending.

How this ties to your page

Subscribers usually join through a Newsletter block on a live Flo page. Until they confirm, they do not count toward this audience. See Email capture.

Unsubscribe behavior

Each subscribed contact has a marketing-list unsubscribe link in the footer. If they unsubscribe:

  • Their status becomes unsubscribed on Subscribers
  • They are not included in future All subscribers broadcasts
  • They can still be an active member of a membership (see below)

Members only

Use this when the message is for people inside a paid or free membership — member-only posts, community news, tier-specific offers — not your entire marketing list.

Who receives the email

IncludedExcluded
Fans with active membership status for the membership you selectCanceled, paused, or other non-active memberships
Fans who left Email membership announcements from creator turned on in their membership portalFans who turned that notification off (see Member notification preferences)
Fans with a valid email on their profileProfiles Flo cannot mail due to deliverability suppression

They do not need to be on your subscribed marketing list. A member-only send can reach someone who never signed up for the Newsletter block.

When Members only is unavailable

The Members only tab is disabled until you have at least one membership. Hover shows: Create a membership first to target members only.

Create memberships under Dashboard → MembershipsMemberships overview.

Picking the membership

With Members only selected:

  1. Choose the membership from the dropdown (names match Dashboard → Memberships).
  2. The count pill updates to N members for that membership.
  3. If the count is 0, Send stays disabled and Flo blocks the send with This membership has no active members to send to.

How it looks after sending

On Dashboard → Broadcasts, member campaigns show a MEMBERS tag beside the subject. View report shows Membership · [name] instead of All subscribers.

Unsubscribe behavior

Member broadcasts use a separate unsubscribe link from your main list. Opting out of membership announcements does not automatically unsubscribe them from All subscribers broadcasts (and the reverse is also true).

Choosing the right audience

You want to…Use
Announce something to everyone who joined your email listAll subscribers
Email only people in the Inner Circle / VIP tierMembers only + pick that membership
Reach buyers who never subscribed to the newsletterMembers only (if they have an active membership)
Re-engage people who have not confirmed signup yetNeither — they are still pending; improve confirmation flow (Email capture)
Email people who unsubscribed from marketingNeither — respect unsubscribed status unless they re-subscribe

Same person, two lists

Someone can be subscribed and an active member. A broadcast to All subscribers still reaches them. A Members only send reaches them even if they are not on the marketing list. Pick the audience that matches the message — do not assume one send covers both unless you intend it.

Understanding the count pill

Before you send, Flo shows how many people match your audience right now.

AudienceCount means
All subscribersRows on Subscribers with status subscribed (same number you see on the Broadcasts header)
Members onlyActive members for the selected membership

Why the final send number can be slightly lower

Flo may deliver to fewer people than the pill shows when:

  • A subscriber was suppressed after bounces or complaints
  • A member turned off Email membership announcements from creator
  • An email address is invalid or missing

That is normal. The report after send shows the real Recipients count.

List health tiers (Hot / Warm / Cool / Cold)

On Dashboard → Subscribers, the List health card shows Hot, Warm, Cool, and Cold tiers.

These tiers do not appear as separate audience buttons in compose. When you send to All subscribers, Flo may pace delivery by tier so engaged fans get mail first and risky addresses are spread out. That affects timing, not whether someone is on your list.

Before a large All subscribers send, check List health and Sender reputation. Details: Manage your list · Broadcast deliverability.

Member notification preferences

Active members can control email in their membership portal (your Fan Hub / membership area). Under Notifications they may see:

SettingEffect on broadcasts
Email me new postsCommunity post alerts — not the same as broadcasts
Email membership announcements from creatorWhen off, they are skipped for Members only broadcasts

Default is on when they have not changed it. You cannot override this from the composer — respect their choice.

Personalization

For both audiences, Flo can insert a first name in the body when you use personalization placeholders (for example a first name merge field in the editor). Names come from:

AudienceName source
All subscribersFirst name on the subscriber row (if collected on signup)
Members onlyName on the fan profile

If no name exists, Flo uses a friendly fallback like “there” in the rendered email.

Changing audience on a saved broadcast

StatusCan you change audience?
DraftYes — switch All subscribersMembers only anytime; autosave keeps it
ScheduledYes — open Edit, change audience or membership, save
Sending / SentNo — audience is locked; Duplicate the campaign to resend with a different audience

Switching from All subscribers to Members only (or the other way) can change the recipient count sharply. Re-read the count pill before you confirm Send.

Send confirmation

When you Send now, Flo asks:

Send this broadcast? You're about to send to N confirmed subscribers — or N active members. This cannot be undone.

Schedule uses the same audience; it only changes when the send runs — Scheduling broadcasts.

Troubleshooting

IssueWhat it means
Send disabled, count 0 (subscribers)No subscribed fans — add a Newsletter block and wait for confirmations
Send disabled, count 0 (members)No active members for that membership
Members only greyed outCreate a membership first
Count on Broadcasts ≠ people who got mailSuppressed addresses or member opt-outs removed at send time
Member did not get a Members only emailCheck they are active, notifications on, and email on their profile
Subscriber did not get All subscribers emailStill pending, unsubscribed, or suppressed
Wrong people got the emailWrong audience tab or membership selected — duplicate and resend carefully
Want a subset (tags, geography, etc.)Not available in Flo compose today — clean the list on Subscribers or use Members only for one tier
